Native Americans first settled the area that Savannah founder General James Oglethorpe developed to protect Savannah from a Spanish invasion via inland waters. Thunderbolt eventually began to buzz with river traffic as local plantations utilized the location for shipping purposes. The town was incorporated as Warsaw in the year 1856, and began playing a key role in the local fishing industry.

In the late 1800’s Thunderbolt, Georgia, had become a resort area for tourists and housed area attractions such as a horse race track and public park. In 1890, it became the site of the first college in Georgia for black students. Originally known as the Georgia State Industrial College, the name changed to Savannah State College in 1950. By 1956, the school occupied 136 acres with 30 buildings, making it the largest black college in Georgia. A meeting of the town fathers in 1921 resulted in the name returning to its original moniker, Thunderbolt. A yacht basin was constructed in 1939 to accommodate yacht racing among the elite visitors to the community.
