Higher Education Opportunities Abound For Savannah Real Estate Owners

Savannah real estate owners embrace the city's academic community and its many opportunities of higher education.

Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) is located on the southside of Savannah and offers undergraduate and graduate studies. The college was founded in 1935 as a junior college and was located in the downtown Savannah area. It was moved to its present location in 1966. In the fall of 2006, 6,728 students were attending classes on the 268-acre campus.

Savannah Education and Colleges Aerial PhotoAASU offers degrees in arts and sciences, education, health professions, computers and graduate studies. Non-credit courses are also offered in areas such as creative arts, home inspection, language and real estate for locals and owners of Savannah real estate. AASU’s Lifelong Learning Institute offers college level courses for the non-traditional student aged fifty and older, an opportunity many Savannah real estate owners are quick to take advantage of.

The college received a grant from the National Science Foundation to fund research and also received the Peach Belt Conference's Presidents' Academic Award for 2005-2006 honoring academic achievement in student athletes. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

In midtown Savannah, Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC) is a major teaching hospital, and categorized as such by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

University residency programs include Diagnostic Radiology, Family Medicine, Surgery and Internal Medicine and in pediatric medicine at Backus Children’s Hospital, which is located on the campus of MHUMC.

Savannah Education - Downtown AerialIn downtown Savannah, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) began in 1978 as a small private art college. As the school began to grow into an urban campus, the college began to play a significant role in the revitalization of Savannah’s downtown community. Almost thirty years later, SCAD has restored buildings throughout the downtown Savannah area, enlarging its campus while preserving the city’s historical architecture.

The Georgia Trust and the National Trust has recognized the college for its preservation efforts. SCAD has also received numerous accolades for making a mark in the world of art education. Kaplan/Newsweek named the college the “Hottest College for Studying Art” in 2005. CNN’s Airport Network featured the college’s Lacoste “Afterglow” exhibition in 2007, and a SCAD professor’s photo illustration was featured on the cover of the New York Times Magazine.

SCAD’s undergraduate and graduate enrollment in the fall of 2004 was 2,094. Students participate in many cultural events sponsored by the college including the Sidewalk Arts Festival, the Savannah Film Festival, and Savannah art exhibits by renowned artists such as Dale Chihuly and Annie Liebovitz. The college has extended its campus boundaries, offering classes in Savannah, Atlanta, Lacoste, France and distance e-learning.

Savannah Education - FlowersSCAD offers degrees in fine arts, architecture and urban design with majors in animation, architectural history, motion graphics, fashion, fibers, graphic design, illustration and others. Non-credit courses are also available for locals and Savannah real estate owners.

The Savannah College of Art and Design is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the college’s master of architecture degree is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

South University
, located on the southside of Savannah, offers associate’s, bachelor’s, masters and doctorate degrees in the fields such as business, health education and pharmacy. It began in Savannah in 1899 as a business college, and has grown from a two to a four-year college with campuses in South Carolina, Alabama and Florida, and also offers online studies. South University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Savannah State University is the oldest public HBCU, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Georgia, and the oldest higher learning institution in Savannah. The college is located on the southside of the city on a 173-acre campus with ancient oak trees, marshland and historic architecture.

The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of business administration, arts and social sciences and science and technology. Savannah State is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. //
